Every year, the Santa Clarita Public Library’s One Story One City program encourages discussion between residents and promotes reading and learning through the celebration of one story during the month of March. The Santa Clarita Public Library is excited to announce this year’s 2021 book selection Eat Joy: Stories & Comfort Food from 31 Celebrated Writers, edited by Natalie Eve Garrett!!
Eat Joy: Stories & Comfort Food from 31 Celebrated Writers, is a collection of intimate and illustrated essays from literary writers all across the nation. Each essay explores our relationships with food and how it can bring comfort during dark or difficult times.
Readers will delve into delicious recipes, emotional stories and get a sense of the healing that comes from food for many. Some of the featured writers include Lev Grossman highlighting General Tso’s Tofu as it helped him after his divorce, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie making Jollof Rice to navigate the loss of a childhood friend and Carmen Maria Machado recalling growing pains while feeding and caring for herself during her twenties.
Due to the nature of some of the topics covered in the book, this story is recommended for adults and not suitable for readers under the age of 16.

Natalie Eve Garrett is an artist, writer, and the editor of Eat Joy: Stories & Comfort Food from 31 Celebrated Writers (Catapult/Black Balloon, Oct. 2019), a collection of personal stories with recipes that explore how comfort food helps us cope in dark times. She is also the editor of The Artists’ and Writers’ Cookbook: A Collection of Stories with Recipes (powerHouse Books, 2016) and All by Ourselves: 20 Celebrated Writers on the Joys & Perils of Being Alone (Catapult/Black Balloon, Feb. 2022). Natalie lives with her husband and two children in a town outside DC and along the Potomac River.
